At CCSC we pride ourselves on being a college preparatory school, and one of the many ways we prepare students for college is to begin taking students on campus tours as early as 9th grade, so that by the time they are juniors and seniors they have a good idea of what type of school will be the best fit.
This year’s annual “Out to College Day” took place on March 28, as students in grades 9 through 11 traveled by bus with their advisors to tour colleges across three states. Groups visited: Wheaton College, UMass Amherst, Hampshire College, Smith College, Amherst College, Trinity College, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester State University, Trinity College, University of Hartford, Bridgewater State University, and Southern New Hampshire University.
In addition to touring the campus with a student guide and attending an information session with an admission officer, our students had the chance to chat with some CCSC alumni who are students at the colleges they visited. At Southern New Hampshire University, for example, the 9th grade visitors heard from Steven Jenkins ’10, a junior majoring in video game design, about his experience at SNHU.
We encourage students to consider colleges outside New England, too. Over April break, four CCSC juniors will be traveling to Los Angeles with College Counselor Nadira Hairston to visit UCLA, Cal Tech, Occidental College, Whittier College, and the Claremont Colleges. Last fall, Ms. Hairston and Vanessa Barrios (Director of Guidance and Counseling) took ten seniors to visit colleges in Washington, DC.
