The 2014-15 school year (CCSC’s tenth in operation) is underway, with new faculty members and interns reporting for duty on Monday. They have three full days of orientation before returning faculty join them on Thursday for nine days of professional development and curriculum planning. Classes begin on Wednesday, August 27.
In addition to learning about school systems and policies, the new faculty are getting acquainted with each other and learning their way around campus, just as new students did at Summer Academy (but without a dress code or homework). Director of Guidance and Counseling Vanessa Barrios organized a scavenger hunt with clues that led the new faculty on a tour of our three buildings. One clue asked them to take a group selfie along the way.
This week CCSC again hosted the Critical Friends Group Coaches Institute, a weeklong professional development seminar offered by the School Reform Initiative, a Denver-based nonprofit with longstanding ties to the school. Twenty teachers and school leaders from across the U.S. spent five days training with SRI facilitators Gene Thompson-Grove and Catherine Tighe to become CFG coaches at their home schools. A good teacher recognizes that students have different learning styles, but it can be challenging to differentiate instruction to effectively reach all the kinds of minds in their classroom. To help ensure that every CCSC student receives the type of instruction he or she needs to succeed, four learning specialists and four administrators recently completed three days of All Kinds of Minds training with expert AKOM facilitator Gene Thompson-Grove. During one of this week’s professional development sessions, the entire CCSC faculty shared some of the phrases they use to motivate students to always do their best work and to encourage them to keep persevering, no matter how hard it seems. Teachers jotted down each phrase on yellow stickies and read them aloud to each other. We’ll be hearing a lot of these words of encouragement in classrooms when classes start next Wednesday. Continue reading “Find the Good and Praise It”
The 2013-14 school year officially began today with the first of three days of orientation sessions for new CCSC faculty.
